Some Sacramento doctors are offering a prescription ointment to help teenagers grow longer, darker, thicker eyelashes.
Latisse, a FDA approved medication, is used to help eyelash hypotrichosis, a condition that results in having inadequate or not enough eyelashes. The ointment is being offered by prescription at some doctor's offices. It is also offered by prescription for cosmetic use.
The treatment is attractive to those who wish to have more lustrous eyelashes without having to wear mascara and without the worry of make-up smudges, streaks or the need for eye make up remover.
The ointment is used once nightly by placing a drop of the medication onto a sterile applicator and drawing the applicator across the skin of the upper eyelid where the eyelashes meet the skin.
According to information released about Latisse, the most common side effects are itching of the eye or redness. The medication use may also cause darkening of the skin on the eyelid.
