Social Development & Emotional Development
during puberty - finding yourself
As stated previously, tweens and young teens spend more time with peers and less time with parents. The goal is to figure out who they are. They will try on different personas, in their hairstyle, their clothing choices, music, friends and extra-curricular activities. If your tween or young teen appears to have attention deficit disorder without actually having a diagnosis, this is probably why.
As was also stated previously, tweens and young teenagers are somewhat ambivalent about breaking away from their parents. They can be aloof one moment, only caring about friends, exerting their independence and in your arms cuddling like they used to when they were younger the first chance they get. It is a confusing time for teens, and it is equally confusing for parents.
If your tween or young teen is happy one minute and crying or irritable the next, this is normal. Moodiness comes along with puberty and this time in a teenager’s life.
