Slutty Halloween Costumes
for Tweens and Teens
It is nearly impossible to find a Halloween costume that isn’t about selling sex – one that doesn’t scream “Slut!” Even for five year olds in their trashy cat outfits or slutty chambermaid outfits with midriffs bared, high heels (relatively speaking of course) and adult makeup striking sexy poses in the advertisements.
Even the names of the costumes are inappropriate. Names like sweet pirate, lovely ladybug, convict cutie, disco dolly, magic mushroom, major trouble (a super short military outfit) and devil delight. Some of the costumes come with fishnet stockings. Others come with thigh-high stockings. All of the costumes are pictured with girls striking sexy poses and hungry looks on their faces, wearing high heeled shoes.
Sadly, many girls are simply following their Mother’s lead. Moms who dress in sexy clothing on a regular basis seem to encourage young girls and teenagers who dress sexy. Unfortunately, while it may be appropriate in some instances for mom, it comes off trashy for daughter.
If girls aren't following mom's lead, then they have plenty of role models in the media to choose from. Take Noah Cyrus' recent red-carpet Halloween tragedy. A 9-year-old prancing on the red carpet looking like a hooker. Fantastic role model for our tweens and teens.
Some recommendations if your teenager or tweenager wants to dress trashy this Halloween:
- Refuse to purchase anything that screams sex. Make this non-negotiable. She’ll hate you for now, but she’ll get over it.
- Ask your teen what the appeal is – how does she feel when she’s dressed in sexy clothing? This could lead to some insight into her emotional state.
- Ask your teenager what message dressing in a sexy outfit sends to other people, not just boys her age. Does your teenager understand that dressing sexy sends a message that she is sexually active and sexually available?
- Have a positive male role model (her father or someone else close to her) talk to your teenager about his feelings about the costume. Ask him to address how boys her age would respond to such an outfit (from his own history of being a boy her age).
It is important to give your teenage daughter a little bit of leeway when it comes to her outfit choices. You need to decide how far is too far, and then give her choices within your acceptable range. Otherwise, if you are too strict when it comes to outfit choices, your teenager will simply leave the house dressed in what you want her dressed in and as soon as she’s out of the house, she’ll change into the outfit she snuck out of the house.

Thanks Beverly! I was shocked myself. I appreciate the feedback!
These costumes are ridiculous, more of a reason to get creative and make your own spooky or fun costume!
Marie, I agree 100% ... although I'm not much of a seamstress. Thankfully I have a boy!
What happened to the times when the costumes were about fun, humor or general American stuff like colonial presidents, baseball players and clowns?
