With the release of the iPhone 4, many people are asking how to trade in the iPhone 3G.
The new iPhone 4G is set for release on June 24, 2010. Many iPhone 3G users would like to upgrade, but do not want to lose the money they spent.
Depending on your phone carrier and their upgrade plan, you may or may not be eligible for any decrease in price. AT&T Wireless in Phoenix is offering a trade-in price of $199.00 for the iPhone 4, 16GB phone, if your current iPhone 3G 16GB is twelve (12) to twenty (20) months old. This is a $400.00 trade-in value, since the full retail price is $599.00.
However, there is another option: trade-in websites.
There are many websites offering trade-ins on the iPhone 3G phones paying anywhere from $50.00 to $400.00. The value depends on the specific model of iPhone and the current condition. The $400.00 offer is for a perfectly conditioned iPhone 3GS 32GB, in the box, with all its accessories.
Below is a list of trade-in websites, what they are offering, and some details. Be sure and do your research when sending in any gadgets for online trade-in. Make sure the company is reputable and read the fine print of the agreement.
The sites all have a trade-in calculator in which you specify the current condition and model of the iPhone. Most of the sites will then allow you to print a postage-paid label in which to send in the phone. You will need to supply the box for shipment and expect 2-3 weeks for processing. If the company offers a box, be prepared for more wait time. Each company will verify the condition of the iPhone and will then mail you a check or pay you via PayPal.
Currently offering $400.00 for the iPhone 3GS 32GB phone in perfect condition and $200.00 for the iPhone 3G 16GB in perfect condition.
Offering $314.00 for the iPhone 3GS 32GB and $148.00 for the iPhone 3G 16GB. Both offers are for iPhones in perfect condition with all accessories.
With their "Trade and Save Program", Radio Shack is offering $170.06 for the iPhone 3G 16GB and $301.33 for the iPhone 3GS 32GB phone.
Some other sites you may want to research are:
Remember, as with any upgrade, the price will probably drop as we get closer to the release date of the new iPhone 4. So, you will need to make an informed decision. Do your research, including speaking with your phone provider.

There is no such phone called the iPhone 4G. It's simply called the iPhone 4 which operates the iOS4 software. 4G refers to the fourth generation of cellular wireless standards. It's confusing because Apple called its last model 3G and 3GS. I enjoy your column! I'm the Phoenix Mobile Media Examiner.
Nick - thank you for the feedback. I understand the iPhone 4 naming, but many people are still calling it the iPhone 4G (for laymen's terms) so I probably should have clarified in the article. I also published information in my Newsletter about the 4G and what each of the generations of cellular technology mean.
Thanks for the list Debbie. I’ve been researching the best site to sell a iPhone 3G. A couple other sites with good quotes were http://selliphoneforcash.com/ and http://www.celltradein.com/ . Hope that helps
