Nintendo shows off 3DS, 3D handheld with no glasses required

Working Nintendo 3DS systems were shown off at the E3 convention in Los Angeles, CA. Nintendo's
new portable, handheld gaming system allows users to experience 3D gaming without the need for
specialized glasses.

The ongoing E3 convention in Los Angeles has already seen the unveiling of Microsoft and Playstation’s new motion control based game play for their current gen console’s, but Nintendo is getting strong reactions from their new portable handheld gaming system, the Nintendo 3DS.

Using the platform for their successful, long running DS system, the 3DS takes gaming into the future. It is 3D game play without the 3D glasses. Because the system is a handheld, portable device, the forced focus screen sets 3D images when the viewing eyes are at the right spot. If the device is tilted one way or the other, the 3D effect disappears. This is the reason that TV’s, computers, movie theaters, and current generation gaming consoles will require the user to wear glasses, the viewing angle has to be from multiple locations.

Nintendo has recently updated the DS system with the DSi and the DSi XL, both DS systems with front facing and rear facing cameras. The 3DS system will also have the camera sets, but the rear camera will include two lenses for 3D image capturing. Nintendo also announced that they are working with the game developers to take advantage of the added depth of field that 3D gaming presence.

Nintendo continues to prove that they are the leaders of the handheld gaming industry and their DS platform has stood the test of time. The small hardware upgrades have a loyal following and fans of the DS platform, as well as owners of the current DSi (XL) system will surely be in line to purchase this newest hardware device.
