Phone booths have been disappearing as cell phones have become prevalent (sorry Dr. Who and Superman), but they will start reappearing now that Google has announced Google Voice integration with Gmail. At the same time they announced the new feature, they announced there will be Google Voice phone booths (as above) showing up at universities and airports to show off the new service.
Why saddle our landscape with phone booths again? Reportedly, they want folks to try Google Voice which, quite naturally, could lead to some revenue for Google (natch).
While not given clues as to how many phone booths would be appearing or what regions of the country would see them, Google said they should start popping up in the next few weeks. At that time, they said, more details will emerge.

It's pretty neat. You can get free long distance if you have a landline. You can choose your own area code.
