Confirmed: original Droid to get Froyo beginning next week

Follow my_iria on TwitterIt's begun. First came the Nexus One, which Google promised would be the first Android phone to get Froyo. Earlier this week, Sprint announced it would release Froyo on the Evo 4G, with client-initiated updates starting today. Now, we have confirmation from Motorola that the original Droid will get Froyo next week.

To be exact, the forum post by Motorola confirms a rumor that came earlier in the day. The post notes that OTA updates to the venerable device will begin the week of August 2nd. That would be the same week that the Evo 4G will start getting OTA update notifications (as opposed to client-initiated updates).

The post went further and says that some small set of users might see updates as early as Friday night, as a test run. However, it was noted that "test roll-out" was not confirmed.

The Evo 4G and Droid are the first in what will probably become a flood of Froyo updates for devices. Our only question now is: where's the Droid X's update?

The Nexus One DID get froyo. Also, seeing that this article came out only 2 hours after engadget's, this isn't really news but regurgitation of information.

Thank you so much. Can't wait. So I am a nub at smartphones. Does both updates ota and direct come out at the same time?

Yeah Charlie, you're right. If CNN puts a story online why have other media, including net and TV and radio and print, run the story. Once is enough, eh?

I was so exited to get the 2.2 update on my original Droid only to be disappointed that I can't tether or use it as a wireless hot spot. Of course they offered to upgrade my Droid until they realized that I just upgraded in April. Is there another app that I can download from the marketplace to use the Droid as a tether.
