Mobile Car Event Camera - GPS Location Recording (spychest.com)
To merely call this device a dash camera is an understatement of great proportion. This amazing windshield mounted device includes a GPS receiver and recorder that interfaces with Google Earth to play back your exact position on a map and a camera resolution of your choice as well as accelerometers in three axes (left & right, forward & backwards, and up & down). This effectively provides shock, and turn indications on a graph at the bottom of the screen of the included software. On top of all of this, it does indeed provide a camera to record the action in a wide angle perspective of all that is going on around you from your front windshield. Oh, and did I mention that it also records audio inside the car if you like? In addition, you can switch between KPH and MPH with the click of your mouse.
In addition, there are many custom settings. You can set the device to record constantly onto SD media cards (a 1 GB card is included) or only when a shock event is detected. You can also turn the audio recording on and off as well as set the sensitivity of the accelerometers that record shock events. This adjustment feature has proven to be of great benefit on the extremely bumpy Denver roads in the '95 Pathfinder that I used to test this incredible device. In addition, you can change the resolution and frames per second that the camera records. One of my favorite features is that the XDriven device will automatically record the installation software required to replay all of this information on the SD card if it is inserted blank. No searching for the install CD required.
So who could use this device? In my opinion, everyone should have one. It could prove invaluable in an accident when fault is in question. Police departments world-wide have used similar devices for years to great effect. The video does not lie. If you have a teen driver, this device is certainly for you. With the audio recording feature you can tell if your teen is blasting music too loud and get and idea of their speed (via GPS recording) and a record of the time and exactly where your teen has driven. In addition the XDriven device could prove invaluable to limo drivers, delivery truck fleets, and buses, commercially. From a personal perspective, what could be better to document a road rage incident or deliberately staged accidents?
All those aside, what a great way to record family travels and "geo-cache" locations visited.
Even though I have been driving for many years, I found that when I installed the device and was aware of its incredible functionality, I became a much more careful driver. This alone makes it well worth its selling price of $399.99. At first this may seem like a lot of money but when you consider the security and protection it can provide I believe it is a bargain. I was fortunate that Spy Chest was willing to provide the XDriven for testing. I had several questions during the trial period and Pat Palmer of Spy Chest was very helpful. Spy Chest believes in providing the best quality devices and support for their customers and in my experience they do just that. I honestly believe that they would not be happy if the customer was not happy.
Just as a quick example, here is a recording from a British feed (which is why the car is driving on the wrong side of the road). Please note it is considerably smaller than the XDriven software output:
The XDriven unit comes with very sticky mounting tape for permanent mounting or you may also get a suction cup temporary windshield mount if you want to move the device from car to car for an additional $15.99
I honestly found very little not to like about this device and highly recommend it and Spy Chest. If you purchase the XDriven, I think you will agree.

I use this very device and have to say, I am thrilled with the quality. Just yesterday I was nearly in a collision. A vehicle almost hit me trying to dart across 2 lanes of traffic. I captured the event as it happened. Thankfully they did not hit me.
