Microsoft announced yesterday that Windows 7 has reached the coveted 100 million license mark, which makes it the fastest-selling operating system in the Redmond company's history.

The desktop OS has surprisingly been a growth engine in Microsoft's yearly revenue stream, with Windows-based revenue up over 28% from last year, according to Silicon.com.

One out every ten PCs runs Windows 7

That 100 million license mark means that one out of every ten PCs in the world runs Windows 7.  The enterprise computing arena is where Microsoft has seen the most success with Windows 7, as the early adoption rates, even before the first service pack is released, greatly exceed the same numbers for the maligned Vista OS.

Because of this success, Windows 7 looks set to be the de facto standard for business computing operating systems by the end of 2010.  The OS is popular with home users as well; most Columbus technology retailers, including Micro Center and Best Buy, have seen great success in selling Windows 7 PCs to consumers.

Windows Touch for Windows 7 launched

Adding to the glow of high sales for Windows was last week's launch of Windows Touch for Windows 7 for public download.  The suite of touch-enabled Microsoft apps was previously only available to OEMs.

Microsoft is hoping its success in the enterprise will combine with their touch technology to help them to compete in the mobile space with both Apple and Google.  The fact that Windows Phone 7 is still months away from public release will make that competition difficult, but the upcoming HP Slate tablet PC could be a better indicator for how it will ultimately shake out.
