Virtual Porthole aboard Disney's Dream
When Disney's newest ship, the Dream, sets sail in early 2011, it will be one of the first commercial cruise ships to feature virtual windows. Using a liquid crystal display and a series of high definition cameras, passengers of the inside staterooms will now get a feel for what it's like outside. To make things even more exciting, viewers may catch a glimpse of what Disney calls "a magical surprise." The surprise being appearances from Disney characters displayed over the real-time footage. Suddenly, the uneventful crashing of ocean waves becomes something new as Nemo and friends swim under the water, or Mickey Mouse paddles up on a surfboard.
In addition to the virtual windows, the new ship will debut another cruise-industry first: a shipboard water coaster. Stretching over 765 feet in length, it is sure to be a hit with the younger passengers. While this is not the first time cruise ships have used LCD information displays inside the cabins, it is the first time anyone has thought to simulate an actual seaside view. Cruises to the Bahamas and Disney's private island, Castaway Cay, are scheduled to commence January 26th, 2011.
