Nook eBook reader, photo credit Barnes and Noble
Barnes & Noble just announced that pre-orders for their $259 eBook reader, the Nook, would not be filling until after the holidays. Being touted as the “World’s Most Advanced eBook Reader,” the Nook goes head to head with Amazon’s Kindle. Both readers use eInk technology, offering a paper-like reading experience, but the Nook goes one step further by adding a color LCD touch screen allowing users to browse through full color book covers.
Amazon’s Kindle has dominated the eBook market for just over two years now. It still ranks number one on Amazon’s “Most wished for” list. However, if this shortage of the Nook is any indication of the device's future success, the Kindle may have met its first real competitor.

Who want to wait? People want it now. Amazon going to lower the price and sell more.
@ JJ - I haven't had hands on experience with the Nook yet, but from the photos, it looks like a pretty slick device. The Kindle is great in terms of simplicity and tight integration with Amazon.com, but the Nook appears to be some actual competition. Touch screens and cover flow are all things that consumers seem to like, and the Nook delivers them at a similar price point. It will be interesting to see whether or not this shortage was an artificial one, or if this is really the Kindle alternative consumers have been looking for.
