A recent report at the Black Hat security Conference in Las Vegas exposed the SMS vulnerability in popular smartphones like Apple’s Iphone, Google’s Android, and Windows Mobile on Thursday where the user can be knocked offline and force to visit unwanted websites, according to the Associated Press News Release.
At the conference a group of well known hackers like Charlie Miller and Collin Mulliner were able to demonstrate the vulnerabilities of all these sophisticated mobile phones.
With the increase in use and demand for mobile phones they have become the next target for hackers. With traffic increasing with smart phones in age of technology, access to personal data from email to online banking will require more precaution.
Apple was the first to deliver the 3.0.1 update for all three generations of the Iphone that fixes the SMS vulnerability. Google Also released a statement to have patched the flaw and there is not information on Microsoft releasing an update for current Windows Mobile phones.
Companies will face fierce and knowledgeable customers who are becoming more demanding and knowledgeable about the use of their products. In the end, it comes down to who can deliver efficiently and quickly.
The update for the Iphone takes a few minutes: goes through the backup, download and installs the update. Apple has come a long way since the first phone was released and its proving that staying ahead of the competition even for a SMS flaw means not losing market share to the other sharks.
On a personal note, owning the Iphone 3G the update took a few minutes to install the patch and all the information remains intact.
