Gettin’ Inked at Alley Cat Tattoo

2012 is full speed ahead and what better way to bring something fresh than start a new Tattoo Designs feature. This year will bring editorials straight from the studios. Whether it’s your Examiner Gettin’ Inked or an enduring fan we will be on scene to document the process and interview enthusiast and artist.

First up is one of yours truly. Recently I visited Alley Cat Tattoo to have the ingenious soul Francine Adams tattoo a meaningful phrase I have been itching to get along my shoulder. Delicate designs do not do Adams' talent justice, all the same it turned out perfect and as I envisioned.

In preparation to give an ink junkie a quick fix Adams mentioned "I like where you’re putting this…not many people know where they want their lettering" adding that most clients go for backs. The artist also stated she liked the script choice. When I told where I found the Scriptina lettering she said “Yes, DaFont…DaFont.com is da sh*t!” Chatting about the site’s capabilities she said a lot of times she refers unsure clients to the website to do their research. People come in wanting lettering but oblivious to what style they want or unaware of how the chosen script will look with the phrase they have selected. DaFont has a feature that allows you to type in the words you’re planning to use and see how it will look in that particular style. If you find a winner, you’re able to save and print it for free.

My wispy design flows amazingly along the top of my shoulder and is healing great. As for the pain factor, though I was warned it was not going to feel great, my very best recollection was not horrible but definitely not the least painful spot. On a scale of 1 – 10 with 10 being the worst the pain was a 6, in some places 6.5 tops. For those seeking the pain of a tattoo a little more than the art it would be a breeze. The worst area was ‘Weather’ which is closest to my neck. A lot of nerves going crazy there, I believe mostly due to neck pain I already had prior to the appointment. I told friends Gettin’ Inked was my way of kicking the pain in my neck and back’s ass and it worked…for 20 minutes anyway.

‘Weather the Storm’ speaks for itself; still it’s the title to my personal life struggles. In relation to my other pieces the shoulder placement was the best choice.

This is my second experience at Alley Cat; though both were brief I always have a great time and enjoy the professionalism and humor of the artist and staff. If you’re in the St. Louis area Alley Cat Tattoo is approximately 45-60 minutes west and houses artists Francine Adams and Amelia McCormack (also of Cheap TRX Tattoo). Their art has unique approach and well worth a visit or two. Visit the shop or click the links for contact information, hours, and photos of other designs.
