Places to swim: The Salvation Army Kroc Center in La Mesa

The Salvation Army Ray & Joan Kroc Community Corps Center in La Mesa is a fantastic spot in the La Mesa community. Although it boasts many state of the art venues and multiple activities for community members, the aquatic center is one of its best features.

The aquatic center at the Kroc Center, as it is commonly known, has three pools – an all-deep 25 meter by 25 yard competition pool, an all-shallow 25 yard recreation pool, and a shallow warm-water therapy pool. The competition and recreation pools are outdoors and heated to approximately 82 degrees Fahrenheit, while the therapy pool is indoors and heated to approximately 96 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Kroc Center’s competition pool is one of the best places to swim in the East County area. The water feels cooler than 82 degrees, making extended or sprint-heavy work outs more enjoyable (swimming for an extended period of time or doing multiple sprints in warm water can be very uncomfortable), and being that the pool is typically open for lap swim from 5:30 AM to 8:45 PM on weekdays, 8:00 AM to 5:45 PM on Saturday, and 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Sunday, most anyone can fit a few swims into their weekly schedule.

The recreation pool is a good place for water aerobics, water walking, swim lessons, and more.

The pool deck is spacious and has several comfortable chairs, tables with umbrellas, and shaded areas. Pull buoys and kickboards are available for pool patrons to borrow. The locker rooms and showers are kept very clean and are located adjacent to the pool.

Because of its central location and excellent features, the Kroc Center is home to many aquatics teams, including youth and adult swim teams and youth water polo teams.

Members of the Kroc Center are able to use the pools as part of their membership. Non-members may purchase a one-time swim pass for $5.00, or a ten-swim pass for $45.00. This pass has no expiration date.
