When Michael Phelps jumped into the Polytechnic Institute pool today in Baltimore, it wasn't to log in a few thousand yards: he was helping middle school students learn how to swim. According to Erica L. Green of the Baltimore Sun, the Michael Phelps Swim School teamed up with the city school's summer school program to offer 20 hours of swimming lessons to students.
Some of the students, who were uneasy at first, were in awe of the superstar's abilities. Students quickly became comfortable with the water because of their celebrity coach. 60 students will continue to receive swimming lessons from coaches at the Michael Phelps Swim School.
Making a Difference
Phelps is not the only celebrity hoping to help kids learn how to swim. World-record holder Cullen Jones is working with Make a Splash to help make swimming lessons available to all. There are Make a Splash programs in Colorado Springs and Castle Rock.
