Today we witnessed the inspiring discussion on climate change between the world leaders of China and the United States. CNN press revealed that President Obama and Chinese President, Ju Hintao, said their nations will cooperate to advance technologies and work toward a global agreement on reducing carbon emissions.

This is a monumental acknowledgment of both countries to recognize the goal of raising environmental focus worldwide by expanding cooperation in climate change, environment and energy.

One individual who is making steps to influence environmental change is Mei Zhang, founder of WildChina sustainable travel company. The travel company offers unique, culturally and ecologically sensitive journeys to all corners of China. Travelers who have a fascination with Asian culture and its natural beauty will be very pleased with WildChina's offerings. They feature excursions with families and schools where travelers can engage in interactive workshops like calligraphy, kite and lantern making, service learning, hikes, and lessons in Chinese culture.

I met Mei on a wonderful mountain hike in Charlevoix, Quebec while we both were attending the Adventure Travel Trade Association's World Summit conference. Her enthusiasm for sharing the amazing riches of Chinese culture and wild beauty with me was infectious and inspiring. Her company was born from an interest in creating support for travelers looking to get off the beaten path in China. The motto of the company is "Experience China Differently!"

So many of us want to experience a country off-the-tourist-bus route and engage ourselves within the natural setting of a village and its culture. What I like most about Mei's vision is her dedication to responsible tourism. The website states that "We are committed to protecting the natural environment through the promotion and support of conservation efforts, office recycling and ecologically sensitive tours. We are also committed to training and employing local personnel, thus promoting the economy of local people and communities."

This environmental philosophy elevates WildChina as a company that I can highly recommend to travelers looking for an authentic China experience while recognizing a commitment to sustainable travel practices.

Why am I so emphatic about WildChina? Because they offer the type of customized trips that I would enjoy which includes getting out of the usual tourist trappings and into off-the-beaten path areas with access into more intense experiences. A few of their featured journeys that bring awareness to the destination and recognition of the conservation efforts to preserve wildlife and cultural heritage are:

Track Wild Panda Footprints
WildChina is launching a series of exclusive journeys exploring the core conservation areas in western China where the bulk of the world's remaining 1,600 wild pandas live.

Old Country Living - Wandering the Rustic Landscapes of Guizhou and Guangzi
WildChina takes travelers into the breathtaking backcountry of Southwest China where there is hiking near local footpaths amidst rice paddies and into remote villages to engage in native culture, share meals and learn handicraft making.

At this historic moment when two world-leaders of two economic power-house countries agree to cooperate on reducing carbon emissions it is indeed encouraging to know that there are individuals such as Mei Zhang who are taking steps to further that mission.

Gigi - I'm so glad to see you writing about WildChina. I too was inspired by Mei Zhang's vision, dedication, and enthusiasm when I met her at the Adventure Travel World Summit last month. Though you beat me to it, I'll also be writing about her company in the coming months. Thanks for highlighting the great work that Mei and WildChina are doing.
