From her first job decorating birthday cakes while working at a Coquitlam bakery during highschool, to baking for local charities and creating "cookie favours" for friends' weddings, Mika Livingston and her husband Andrew have come a long way in their baking career. Both owners of Steveston Cookie Company are full-time elementary school teachers, and at times of the year their little cookie business becomes their full time job. Their Richmond-based cookie business creates chic, contemporary cookies and their business has grown mainly through word of mouth.  Andrew makes the dough while Mika does the designing and decorating, and they pride themselves on original designs and attention to details.

Their impressive client list includes Koodo Mobile, where their task was to design gingerbread men replicas of characters portrayed in the very popular Koodo ads, then deliver over two hundred cookies to local media outlets such as Rock 101 in Vancouver. Recently they designed The Canadian Red Cross' 100th Anniversary cookie. Other clients include Pepsi, Polygon and Harbour Air Seaplanes, who ordered cookies with a BC inspired design featuring snow-capped mountains. View the slideshow below to see some examples of cookie designs.

More popular orders include weddings, showers and special party orders. Why cookies? Economical, fun and always original. Mika will work with her client's colour scheme to come up with a unique design, whether working from a sketch supplied by her client or coming up with her own artistic creation. For example, for a beach theme, shells or her popular seagull shapes work well. A variety of seasonal shapes are also available. Mika notes that although there are literally over a hundred cutter shapes available, basic round and square shapes are still the most popular, while keeping the words and the designs original.

Steveston Cookie Company's cookies are made from real butter, free range eggs and contain no preservatives. The taste, chocolate or vanilla, can best be described as a buttery sugar cookie. They do not currently supply to retail stores, but orders (minimum one dozen) can be made online by email or phone.  Orders can be picked up at no charge, or delivered for a minimal fee. Cookies are elegantly wrapped with clear cellophane and hand-tied with ribbon They are packaged in an attractive cake box with tissue and are always made fresh to order. Mika and Andrew regularly attend farmers' markets where their cookies are always a hit with locals. For Valentines Day, cookies are a great way to show someone you care. Mika suggests a gable box of Classic Chocolate Chip Cookies mixed with some of their specially decorated sugar cookies, starting at $25, wrapped and packaged for the occasion. Also check their website for some original Valentines Day designs and follow their blog for latest news and cookie designs which are sure to inspire.
