Island Earth Farmers Market: San Francisco's new indoor farmers market

On May 15th, San Francisco's newest farmers market opened at 101 4th Street at the Metreon. It's temporary. When renovations on the space begin sometime this fall, the market's lease will expire. But in the meantime, shoppers can enjoy access to fresh Bay Area food and products seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Offerings include fruit, vegetables, cheese, wine, honey, jams, bread -- even poultry and other meats. And then the sweet stuff, too. There are fifty vendors. Shop on your lunch break and take advantage of the 'curb to you' service and pick up your purchases at the end of the day. You could probably spend some time in SFMOMA and pick up your groceries afterwards just the same. You get the idea: market organizers are trying something a little different and aiming to please.

During the first two weeks the market has been open, there have been a few cooking events and one wine auction, with more events promised. The hope is the indoor market will bring new life to a long underused space. If the full-time shopping venue proves popular, perhaps arrangements will be made for another indoor market when the lease expires for Island Earth Farmers Market later this year.
