Planning your April planting in Maryland

April Showers bring May Flowers! Or in my case, they bring May fruits and vegetables.

Like any gardener I have been faithfully watching the evening temperatures lately, and am happy to not see it drop below freezing. Mid April to early May is the time to start planting a lot of your items in the garden.

Me personally I like to start most of my garden item in trays inside, to give them a leg-up in growing.

If you are looking to plant some items in the garden now, here are the recommended fruits and vegetable seeds to start planting for the Maryland region in April.

Beets

Carrots

Chard

Cress

Endive

Kale

Kohlrabi

Leek

Mustard

Parsley

Parsnips

Salsify

Shallots

Also here are a few items to start as seedlings indoors now, and plant in the ground from the beginning to mid May.

Broccoli

Brussels Sprouts

Cauliflower

Celery

Collards

Horseradish

Lettuce Head

Onions

Of course you want to make sure your ground has been broken up or tilled about a week prior to planting. That way you can pull up any other weeds that show up, and remove those big rocks that may hinder growth. Now is also the time to lay some mulch down on your flower beds, and trim back your roses.

And as always you still want to keep an eye on the daily forecast to make sure you don't have any up-coming evening frosts. If you have a frost, make sure to just cover up your plants. Me personally since I live in the Hereford zone, my planting is just a little bit more delayed as temperatures stay a little bit cooler.

So as Spring is starting to come in full swing, I wish you happy gardening!
