Chicken coops don't have to be large for just a few birds
On Saturday July 11, seven brave urban chicken owners in Savannah opened their yards and coops for the first ever Savannah Tour of Chicken Coops. I was among them.
No one knew how many people might sign up for the tour. Are urbanites even really interested in chickens in the backyard?
The tour organizer, Kelly Lockamy, also a stop on the tour, optimistically organized a tour bus to take everyone from stop to stop. In the end, even a tour bus wasn't enough. The 35 seats on the bus were filled a half hour before the event and a procession of eight cars trailed behind the bus like baby chicks following a mother hen.
The chicken set ups were as varied as their owners. Some had as few as three chickens tucked away in their little city lot. Some raise meat birds as well as laying hens. Some designed their gardens around their coop. All clearly loved their birds and enjoyed showing them off to other chicken enthusiasts.
The day ended at Kelly Lockamy's Wilmington Island home where she keeps several layers. Good food and a few beers encouraged tour participants to mingle and discuss all things chicken. The tour showed that there is a need not only for more chicken tours in the future but also for chicken owners to get together and talk about their chickens, their coops, and everything else under the sun.
Raising chickens in the city is a great activity for fresh organic eggs, lessons for children, and fun getting to know your own quirky and entertaining birds.

Wow--a chicken coop tour?! Awesome local reporting, and a bizarre twist on the typical chi-chi home tours.
