Gulf of Mexico oil spill in Bible Prophecy? you decide

The latest attempt at closing the hemorrhage of oil from a well, one mile deep on the ocean floor in the Gulf of Mexico has failed. (operation Top Kill) The next operation to be attempted will be at least another week in the implementing, and the best fix, (the drilling of relief wells) are at least two months away.

In the prophetic book of Revelation, the apostle John was reporting visions of the end times. In one part of the cryptic prophecy he saw what appeared to be a “mountain” on fire that was “cast into the sea”. It then looked like the water became thick and reddish, with the appearance of the blood of a dead man. By the time it was over, one third of the sea was polluted and one third of the wildlife was killed.

The following are segments of the prophecy:

“And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood; And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life, died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.” Revelation 8:8

“And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea.” Revelation 16:3

Just imagine you are John on the Island of Patmos, almost 2000 years ago. If you had seen what we now recognize as the burning explosion of an oil rig in the middle of the sea, what would you describe it as? Or imagine you were witnessing an oil spill about 2000 years into the future. With your current knowledge at that time how would you describe what the oil looked like on the water? Coagulated blood?

But any one who has grasped the vastness of the sea, would have a hard time imagining one third of the waters polluted and dead.

But consider these alarming facts. The Gulf of Mexico covers approximately 600,000 square miles, measuring approximately 995 miles from east to west, 560 miles from north to south.

TheGulf basin resembles a large pit with a broad shallow rim. The basin contains an approximate volume of 642 trillion gallons with approximately 38% of Gulf waters being shallow intertidal areas, richest in wild life. This sounds like a very large area. However, the pollution ratio of oil to water is that every 1 gallon of oil will ruin 1,000,000 (one million) gallons of water. (per: North Carolina Clean Water Education Partnership)

That means by factoring even the most conservative estimates of the volume of oil that has gushed into the ocean within the first month of this still ambiguous calamity, over 61,000,000,000,000 [Sixty One trillion] gallons of water, or an approximate 10% of the Gulf Of Mexico have been polluted/contaminated so far ....and that is the CONSERVATIVE estimate.

Of course bible prophecy advocates will tell you that the chronology of the prophecies in the book of revelation seem to indicate a sequence of events along a different time line. But the fact I would ask the serious bible scholar to consider is that, if the book of Revelation were to be read as a chronological timeline, it would be the ONLY book of prophecy (with a major portion of Old Testament Scriptures being Bible prophecy) to follow a chronological order. HUM….

That is why some are beginning to view this calamity as of apocalyptic proportion, the significance of which has not even be fully calculated. Biblical Prophecy of the end times?  You decide.

I have no doubt this is fulfillment of Rev 8:8.
Remember that the "Bible Scholars" of Jesus time insisted that he could not be the Messiah because he was from the wrong place.
Maybe Johns vision was not chronological.
Watch for 'wormwood next'. Maybe a North Korean nuclear missile?

This isn't *quite* the fulfillment. Rather, it is a taste--just a taste. It's also out-of-sequence: the Rider on the White Horse has to ride in first, and, bad as Obama is, he ain't it. (He'd like to be, if he knew the first thing about him, but--I don't think he quite cuts the mustard.)

Besides, you left out the rest of that verse: a third of the ships were destroyed.

And one more thing has to intervene: the Rapture, or literally, the Big Snatch. One instant we'll be slogging away at whatever we're worried about, and the next instant we won't have to worry anymore. Here one instant--with Him the next.

Operation Big Snatch is ready to roll anytime. It's just not for us to know when H-Hour and D-Day are, until they come.

I agree with Terry Hurlbut--the Rapture has to occur before the 7 years tribulation and the angelic plagues/Final Judgement. I imagine that the present oil spill event could lead up to the angelic plagues (certainly conceivable to think 1/3 of the waters and life can be destroyed if the leak is not plugged)--but the church has to be removed first before the plagues, hence the Rapture can occur anytime. Also, let's not forget that the world will experience great famine and pestilence during the times of tribulation. Given the US dependency on oil and the Arab nations that control the majority of it, I expect prices to sky rocket and economic troubles like never before--less US offshore drilling, greater demand, less supply, less money--hunger, poverty, possibly disease from a number of factors. Nothing in life occurs by coincidence

    sea became blood = oil?
third part of the creatures = where are they?
third part of the ships = we see any ships destroyed other than the korean ship?

I might not know much about prophecies since i haven't study the bible much but i thing this prophecy is NOT being fulfill by the oil spill. It says "great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea" if im correct the same passage said that it will be call "Wormwood" that is the name of a star, that if im correct scientist have said its in a collision course with Earth. I believe that wat is going to happen is that the star will fall to earth and it will look like a burning mountain. A fallen star or asteroid have the power to wipe out animals and basel alike. Im not saying this is what eventually will happen but i think a start falling will look more like a burnin mountain than oil spill.

To the person named "unbeliever" you question the analogy of oil to blood. No doubt the appearance of the oil resembles blood. So many creatures are dying, and potentially many more will. Even have blood, so the death of living creatures = blood. I'm not sure I see your point in regards to your questioning the analogy of the oil spill to blood.

I believe that a lot of the current events happening now in the world are very similar to the judgements in the bible.
Please take a look at the book of Revelation Chapter 16 vs 1-20.
Now in vs 1-6, it speaks about how 'angels' poured out his bowl on the rivers and springs of water & every living thing in the sea died'. Now doesn't this resemble what's happening with the "Gulf Oil Spill"?
Also, I came across this article today in the "Epoch Times" paper & it explains how there's a new outbreak disease similar to the "AIDS" disease. All of the disease & outbreaks are also similar to the judgement warning listed in Romans 1 vs 18-32.
In this section of Romans, it discusses "God's Wrath Against Mankind" such as illness being poured on wicked mankind & also those dealing with sexual impurity.
As I always say, be prepared by keeping faith no matter what religion you are.

I think the prophecy in Isaiah 24-26 describes the oil spill much more clearly and supports the post-millennial interpretation:

Is 24:3-6 -- "The earth will be completely laid waste and completely despoiled, for the Lord has spoken this word....The earth is also polluted by its inhabitants, for they transgressed laws, violated statutes, broke the everlasting covenant....Therefore, a curse devours the earth…."

Our sin is not against the environment, but against God, for rejecting His law and pretending He does not see our countless murders, thefts, and immoralities. When Cain slew Able, God said, "your brother's blood cries out to Me from the ground." Cain then became a wanderer in the earth. In other words, when the earth/land becomes morally polluted by its inhabitants, the just punishment of God is to have the land spew out its inhabitants.

i think this may be part of prophecy lets also keep an eye on the tropical depression that may turn into a hurricane. the gulf water is currently 85 degrees warmest ever on record! also if the hurricane picks up the oil and brings it into the mainland its poisonous. it will be in the air, food, water and soil keep that in mind also

this prophecy has nothing to do with the oil spill, because in the verse before Revelations 8:8 it read "The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up." it says THE FIRST ANGEL, so obviously this will happen first, and my grass is still green and not one tree i can see is burnt down.

    JOHN,

To show you the typical pattern of prophetic Scriptures, you can see it very clearly in one of the most commonly read books of prophecy, Isaiah.

Isaiah is not a chronological book but rather a compilation of prophetic messages. For example, sections of the book that are prophecies about the coming Messiah (Jesus) show up in Isa 11:1-3; Isa 28:16; Isa 40:9-11; Isa 42:1-4 and Isa 62:11-12

The same kind of pattern can be discovered when surveying the book of Jeremiah.

A number of scholars have pointed out that the book of Revelation is similar. It is a series of visions and prophetic experiences that John had. That does not necessarily mean the visions he described are of things that are chronological. That could change a lot of our conventional wisdom as to what this incredible prophetic book actually is saying.

You said: "Just imagine you are John on the Island of Patmos... what would you describe it as..."

I wouldn't, because I am on the other side of the world!
Daniel and John both, are talking about "their" world - The Middle East! Bible prophecy is ethnographic - wake up people!

Too many people are way too distracted these days trying to make a whole lot about nothing that has to do with what John and/or Daniel wrote about. Study your Bible's, don't glanze at them!

Jesus warned of many false prophets and is that ever more true then now? But no one's talking about that, rather they post every Tom, Dick and Mary's dream to stir the frenzy and that folk's is not Christianity at work.

I really believe this is Revelation 8:8 being fulfilled right before our eyes. First off, keep in mind John never said a mountain, a blaze was cast into the sea. He said he saw as a mountain a blaze being cast into the sea. Next, and it could be a year later, one third of the ships in the ocean are rendered useless or destroyed. Also one third of the fish die. Interestingly enough, as Revelation progresses over what is know as the seven years of tribulation, towards the end of the apocolypse, the entire ocean is as dead man's blood with absolute no living soul left in it. So it took nearly seven years for what appeared to be as a burnning mountain being cast into the sea to kill all life in the entire oceans. The problem is so serious that Jesus said had he not cut time short, there would be no living flesh for him to redeem at his return; all life would have died. Makes sense as the ocean produces 80-90% of the oxygen on earth. Just because it appears they have things under control...

Just because it appears they have things under control... don’t be too optimistic. The enormous oil rig is about 1100 feet high and as a surface area of about 3-4 acres; this could most certainly have appeared to be mountain on fire, toppling into the sea to the prophet John. No other incident in human history has produced such an outcome that clearly matches Revelation 8:8 and Revelation 16. I am predicting something bad is going to erupt in the Gulf and the worst is yet to come. Already, I am seeing the effect of the spill in my garden in NW, Indiana. Many of my plants are dying with an unusual white film on them before they die. I need to take pictures of this. Something is not right, in the air, with the weather, the plants. We have only begun to see God’s wrath on this greedy corporatized world. Every action will be judged; societal sins have reached heaven and God has had his full with man kind and now he must pour his judgment on their stupidity. I do not find this frightening

  • VIctor Gonzalez 1 year ago

I do not find this frightening at all; I know God's words are being fulfilled and his word is absolute truth. God is measuring man with his word now. Man has fallen short and will be judged. We can expect man to continue making big booboos with this one. It is out of their league and things will only worsen with this matter. Prophecy is already fulfilled and anything man does to try and stop it will be foolish. It is unstoppable. It can not be stopped. The pressures are too great for our meager engineering skills.
