Quirky and cozy, filled with all the book selections you could possibly want, The King’s English Bookstore in Sugar House was the perfect June 3 setting for local cooking author Wendy Paul to sign copies of her latest book, 101 Gourmet Cupcakes in 10 Minutes.
The pink, white, lime green and chocolate (no better word to describe the color) cover of Paul's delightful book sets the tone for something fun and festive. The inside is filled with close up, mouthwateringly tempting color pictures of most of what appear to be sure to please cupcake recipes.
Those who attended Paul’s book signing were fortunate since she brought samples of two of them, root beer float cupcakes with root beer butter cream frosting and ‘nanaimo’ brownie cupcakes—brownies made from a mix enhanced with coconut, almonds and a sensational Bird’s custard-based filling, the results of which can only be described as decadent!
All of Paul’s cupcake recipes use cake or brownie mixes as the base, elevated to gourmet level by her skillful selection of additional ingredients and decorations. The frosting recipes are from scratch, but simple to prepare and worth the effort. Many cupcakes lend themselves to different frostings, depending on individual preferences.
If you haven’t been to The King’s English Bookstore lately, treat yourself to a visit, pick up a copy of Paul’s book, start baking and enjoy your very own, mostly homemade, gourmet cupcakes.
