Lil Wayne starts his one year jail sentence today in New York at Rikers Island for a gun charge that occurred in 2007.
The popular rapper held a farewell party last night at the Dolce Club. Some of the guests at the club were, the entire Cash Money and Young Money families...Nicki Minaj, Drake, Tammy Torres, Tyga, Shaun Garret, Bow Wow, Angela Simmons, Gudda, BG, Juelz, and Birdman reported The 305.
As reported here, Lil Wayne has admitted an addiction to "syrup." That syrup contains codeine, a narcotic.

What Lil Wayne needs to be worrying about now is that syrup addiction, if he is still using. The rapper even commented on his use of the drug about trying to get off of it according to Choose Help. "Everybody wants me to stop all this and all that. It ain't that easy," the rapper stated. Wayne described getting clean through detox treatment, and the withdrawal process as that of "death."
If Lil Wayne is still addicted to the syrup, he is in for a ride these next couple of weeks, minimum. Codeine is an opiate, and capable of producing some gruesome withdrawal symptoms. Often, county jails won't treat opiate addicts. Prisoners are usually left writhing on the bullpen floor, or in their cell in the housing areas.
Most of the time an opiate addict in withdrawal is either bent over the toilet, or sitting on it. Take your pick. Power puking, and jets of diarrhea plague opiate addicts in withdrawal for the most part. Between that, and having the cold-sweats, inability to sleep, extreme anxiety, anxiousness, and many other symptoms, the process is grueling to say the least.
Wayne will experience all of these most likely, unless medical personnel at the jail have some type of protocol to treat opiate addiction. If not, Lil Wayne is going to be very sick rapper for a good 14 days minimum. Some people have even died withdrawing from opiates cold-turkey.
Then there are PAWS, Post Acute Withdrawal Symptoms, where an addict can experience nagging symptoms even after their first withdrawal process is over, up to a year later.
Maybe he took measures before he was scheduled to show up to start his jail sentence as far as backing off on the drugs. However, it doesn't look good in that respect with the comments he made about drug detox treatment previously.
In any event, you can bet Lil Wayne will be treated much differently than the general population. He will no doubt be isolated, and medical may even treat his opiate addiction, if he is still using. He may just deny it when he is medically screened, however, and try to tough it out. If the rapper goes that route he'll be close to a toilet for a few days because opiate withdrawals, and toilets go together like shoes and socks.
Let's hope that Lil Wayne takes advantage of the drug treatment programming available while he is in jail, that is if he still has the syrup addiction. Treatment can not only help him, but also send a positive message to the millions of people who listen to his music, or know about him.
UPDATE:
Lil Wayne sentencing postponed until March 2nd so the rapper can get a tooth fixed according to the Detroit News today, 2-10-10.
That may, or may not bode well for him because after oral surgery he'll probably be prescribed Vicodin, a narcotic pain reliever. On top of the "syrup" he has admitted an addiction to, Lil Wayne shouldn't be feeling much of anything if he is still using the codeine drink. If he is off the syrup, and starts using narcotic pain relievers from the dentist, he could quickly become addicted again if he takes them in any other way than how they are prescribed.

this article is poorly written. First off opiate addicts even moderate addicts experince withdrawl for up to 5 weeks. In his case being a heavy user he will have to be put on methadone or will grow sick to the point of death or suicidal (can't bear the discomfort). 7 to ten days with the squirts and throwing up is an alcaholics withdrawl symptom. Opiate addicts experience hallucination depression cold sweats vomiting the squirts and uncontrollable shaking
To wow:
The only thing poorly written article is the schematic to your brain.
Had you read the article, you would have noticed how serious opiate withdrawals can be. And even though opiate addicts have experienced hallucinations from mainly lack of sleep, alcoholics suffer from way more than opiate addicts.
Frankly, I know who you are, and you cold-trail my articles like a dog in heat.
I have been through these withdrawals more times than you'll ever know, and would bet my job on it. I was also an SA counselor treating addicts still in withdrawal.
Why don't you move on to another site where you might be able to make a little sense, like a children's book. I noted the seriousness of withdrawal symptoms from opiates, including PAWS.
The author is right..and in fact, when these articles are written, talking about opiate use through media outlets...they almost never mention PAWS. Any addict or recovering addict knows that PAWS is 20x harder than the 10 days of hell you experience right discontinued use. Most addicts will also tell you that those 7-10 days are actually fairly easy- not in the sense of mild symptoms- but because after all of their over-indulging the week or 2 of hell almost serves as a poetic justice..sitting awake every night battling the pain, telling yourself this will NEVER happen again once its over. The REAL problem sets in once you start to feel better. You ask yourself, 'now what'..'maybe I'll just get a cpl bags/pills to reward myself, plus my tolerance is WAY down, it'll be fine..' and before you know it you're right back where you started. Rinse and repeat.
I know this is old, but I applaud the author for shedding candid insight on an all too often misconstrued drug/ experience.
