Last week I told you about Washington D.C.’s Stylish Fashionista Contest and now I have the pleasure of introducing the contest’s first winner, Shalyce Tyson of Brandywine, MD.

Shalyce was voted the winner wearing a gold, asymmetrical dress that embraces two of this season’s biggest trends : metallics and draping. It’s no surprise she won the contest, as she admits to being quite the fashionista, embracing mainstream trends like skinny jeans to cutting edge styles like sexy lace handgloves and high shoulders (a la Rihanna).

Shalyce prides herself on having the right outfit for any occasion, be it a night out with the girls or dinner with her husband. She says, “For more casual winter outings, I often opt to wear skinny pants with long form fitting tops or tunics, and an eye-catching pair of pumps or boots.”

But this trend fanatic also embraces classic looks like pencil skirts and A-line dresses. In fact, her favorite color is arguably the most classic color of them all – black – because “it’s timeless, sexy and chic,” precisely the aesthetic she’s going for!

And while Shalyce will freely admit her affinity for Louis Vuitton handbags, she’s a conscious shopper, always seeking the Holy Grail of fashion: the designer “look for less.”

“My favorite clothing store is Bebe because I can find all types of unique and attractive, fashion-forward pieces,” Shalyce says. “My favorite shoe stores are Aldo and Nine West because their shoes are both very dazzling and durable. Additional stores I like to purchase both shoes and clothes from are Nordstrom’s, Macy’s, TJ Maxx and Marshall’s.”

As someone who has her finger on the pulse of the local fashion scene, Shalyce believes D.C. has a growing fashion sense.

“Whether shopping in Georgetown or heading to work downtown, you are sure to see children, teens, women and men decked out in fashionable, attention-grabbing apparel, making the fashion statement “I’m dressed to impress in the city”!

And Shalyce feels important to make a fashion statement even in her position as an economic statistician for the US Census Bureau, opting for “tailored slacks with ruffled blouses and cardigans, cute patterned dresses, skirts and chic blouses…”

When asked if she felt the workplace is becoming more accepting of sartorial aptitude, Shalyce said “the workplace is evolving, and it's not such a focus on proving you are more than your fashion...I believe you can be fashion forward in the work place, without being inappropriate.”

Marie, I think this is among your best articles. I like how you showed this designer as being a real person in need of practical but stylish attire, appropriate for the workplace and for going out afterward. Far too many people in this area don't seem to get the idea of what dress for success means. We need more Shalyce Tysons around. Thanks for shining a light.
