Breaking the mold: How to find your own style in Salt Lake City

New Fall coat available at Koo De Ker

People in Salt Lake City often say they don’t feel like they have style. They feel constrained by a culture of conformity where no one dares step outside the lines.  Many believe that stepping outside the lines means compromising their values, which can include religious values and even price values.  However, you can have style in Salt Lake City while being modest and not spending a fortune.  Here are some tips to help you step outside the lines or break the mold.

Shop local.  While the economy has taken its toll on locally owned businesses across the country, there are still plenty of great boutiques thriving here in Salt Lake.  One of the advantages you will gain by shopping local is a selection of different merchandise.  It’s not going to be the same old thing that you see at every other store.  Boutique owners scope out the market and then buy what they feel is missing.  It is to their advantage to not have what the stores down the street or at the mall have.

One of the best boutiques in Salt Lake City for a great selection of clothes is Koo De Ker in the 9th and 9th district.  The owner, Kyong, does most of her buying in Los Angeles and New York and works really hard to find new and interesting designers to feature in her store.  Kyong has also worked really hard to meet price points for every budget and the store always has great sales.  Join the Koo De Ker Facebook fan page to be kept up to date on all of the happenings there.

Just down the street from Koo De Ker, step into Apt. 202, another store with styles you won’t see everywhere else, as well as a collection of candles that smell a lot better than those Yankee candles all over Utah.

If you haven’t found what you like at any of the local boutiques, go online.  Online shopping will introduce you to styles all across the world.  For example, check out Asos.com. Asos is the UK’s largest online retailer that has a huge selection of merchandise for you to choose from, just make sure you select the correct region on the website otherwise you will be buying everything in British pounds.  You are sure to find new and different things that you won’t see in Salt Lake City.

Playing with accessories is also one of the best and most affordable ways to add your own sense of style to the most mundane outfit. But be bold.  Pay attention to all the advertisements and see if something catches your eye.  One of the hottest trends right now is navy blue nail polish.  Sounds different and a little scary, but that’s what everyone said a couple years ago when black nail polish hit the main stream and wasn’t just for Halloween anymore.  Check out Chanel’s Blue Satin nail polish at Nordstrom’s to give you a hip hand makeover.  If the nail polish is a little out of your budget, get a friend to share it with you, or shop around for something more affordable.

Most importantly, take a chance!  You’ll be surprised how much fun it can be to stand out – just a bit – from your crowd.

Great advice! I would love to see more people shopping local around here, and getting more daring in their style (including myself!) Can't wait to hear what else you have to say.

Is the name, Koo De Ker, supposed to be a take on the French, "Coup de Coeur"? There's a boutique in NYC in Hell's Kitchen by the name of Coup de Coeur, and I love it!

Great article. I agree about how Salt Lakers are afraid of breaking out of the mold. It seems weird to ME that they all dress and look the same.
