A Sunday Kind of Love

The saying that “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” is more than appropriate inside of Sunday Love Atelier, a green-conscious workshop boutique strewn with vintage furniture, clothing and knickknacks. Located at 624 Grand St. in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, it’s a quirky place that deserves a visit.

On an opportune night, I had the pleasure of speaking with all three of the heads and hands behind Sunday Love Atelier: Greer, Scott and Ned. Greer said that after having worked in the fashion industry, she was prompted to open her own business by the desire to work for herself. When I came into the shop (that more closely resembles someone’s cluttered apartment,) she was reupholstering a client’s chair. Sunday Love Atelier’s partners reclaim vintage pieces — they recycle old furniture, “funking” it up to sell at an affordable price to the community. They love to create and they tackle custom projects.

Greer, Scott and Ned began collecting all sorts of things for Sunday Love Atelier two months before opening the shop. Treasures they gathered came from all over the place- Baltimore, Cleveland, New York and Seattle. Some unique finds inside the shop are record players that Scott repairs, a typewriter, a vintage swimming cap, retro photographs and a furry steer’s foot flask. An eye-catching lamp made from discarded ink cartridges hangs in the display window and the so-called anatomy coffee table, its latest version recently sold, sounds curious. The artistic trio periodically redesigns a coffee table, incorporating an anatomy illustration into the new version.

Sunday Love Atelier carries vintage clothing, purses and jewelry made from antique and vintage bits that were “lost but not forgotten.” The business also supports local artists, displaying and selling their work. Accessories by Pearl and Lily are beautifully hand made from discarded fabric.

All possession tell a story and none more so than those collected for Sunday Love Atelier. Ned said that he wanted to “elicit the wow factor” in opening the boutique. You’ll indeed be “wowed;” and since the spirited owners constantly change their wares, you’ll want to come back for another look.
