Shades Of Glory

Digital LA founder Kevin Winston in front of the Olympic Flame in Vancouver.*

For the last 13 days United States athletes have skied, ice skated and snowboarded their way to Olympic victories in Vancouver, Canada.   In the midst of cheering for these shining examples of U.S. athletic prowess (whoot, whoot!) a style-related observation was made: these stars of the snow and ice all have great sunglasses.   From the polarized speed skating variety to the professional snowboarding lenses, to the stylish specs of fans in the stands – the fierce glare off the winter elements brought out all kinds of shades in all their glory.

Here in L.A., sunglasses are always a hot style staple – and the active wear pair shouldn’t be overlooked. This year, get inspired by our gold medalists and get sporty.  If it’s been a while since you considered the perfect sunglasses to wear while playing beach volleyball, tennis, or going for a run – take a peek at what’s new below:

Oliver Peoples, Solstice.

Just a Tint of Color.  Polarizing lenses help remove glare and improve depth perception – critical components for being accurate in sports and, well, just not falling on our faces when moving at fast speeds.  The polarized sunglasses of yesterday were a sickly shade of yellow, that really just wasn’t that attractive.  Today’s technology has thankfully turned down the distinct shade, and turned up the style.  When your sunglasses can now look great, and give you the optimum sight benefits of polarization, why wouldn’t you?  Here is a great pair from Oliver People, which can be found at Soltice at The Oaks, and if you happen to be there – can also be found in Vancouver in their pop-up store at the Olympics.

Oakley, Sunglass Hut.

Lighten Up.  Bright accents, bits of color, a little bit of bling – sporty sunglasses are fun, and don’t take themselves quite as seriously these days.  Have fun with it.  Oakley has gotten in the spirit of the trend and come out with a limited edition Global Collection that touts flags of the countries participating in the Olympics.  These are great specs, and collector’s items to boot.  They carry these at Sunglass Hut at Lakewood Center.

Tory Burch, Sunglass Hut.

Consider Chrome.  Finally, if you are a little more diva than driven athlete, you may feel more comfortable in a colored chrome aviator.  Undeniably sporty, yet insanely trend forward, this throwback style from the 80s is the look for you.   New, hot designers are weighing in on this trend in 2010 and coming out with variations in all different hues of gleaming colored chrome.  One of the latest is Tory Burch; here’s a new pair of hers that you can pick up at Sunglass Hut.
