The city itself boasts some amazing tourist points. If you're outdoorsy, or just enjoy a walk in the sun, Edmonton has an amazing natural trails system that intertwines the entire city.
In summer, Edmonton has a multitude of outdoor festivals and was Canada's Cultural Capital last year. For a full listing of festivals, which include the arts, food, culture, etc., visit the official City of Edmonton website.
Edmonton is also very special for its weather. The summers are hot and dry, and the winters there are excellent snow conditions for skiing and skating. Every neighbourhood has an outdoor skating rink where you can find pick-up hockey.
Another major attraction for Edmonton is West Edmonton Mall shopping complex. It is the largest in the world and contains an indoor waterpark, amusement park, mini golfing and other venues on top of hundreds of stores and restaraunts.
There aren't a lot of hostels in the city but it isn't hard to find low cost hotels. The main hostel is located in Old Strathcona, the neighbourhood right by the University of Alberta. The main drag in Old Strathcona is called Whyte Avenue. During the day, the street contains trendy stores and at night is the place to be in town with dozens of restaraunts, pubs and clubs.
