A stroll through Budapest

Danube River, Castle District

Budapest is full of history, site-seeing and culture.

The capital of Hungary sits on the Danube River and offers an enriching travel experience.

For those interested in the arts, Budapest offers a variety of theaters and concert halls. The Madách Theatre in downtown Budapest plays the Phantom of the Opera while the Budapest Operetta Theatre plays the local works of Kálmán Imre, Huszka Jen? and Szirmai Albert. The Operas  are always full and must be booked in advance.

Depending on when you choose to travel, the city also hosts two large festivals which receive international reknown. The Budapest Spring Festival and the Budapest Autumn Festival occur annually, and showcase the best of Hungarian and international music, theatre, film and other arts.

Budapest also boasts several World Heritage Sites. If you take a stroll away from downtown Pest toward the water, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee has decided to include the Danube River view and the Castle District in the World Heritage List. The Buda Castle by night is quite a site. On the other side of Pest, Heroes’ Square and Andrássy Avenue with the Millennium Underground Railway are also World Heritage sites since 2002. Heroes' Square is surrounded by several notable museums and historical markers so it's definitely recommended to venture to that part of town. Another tourist spot of note is St. Stephen's Basilica, Budapest's largest cathedral.

There are three youth hostels located in the city centre which can be found online by searching Budapest Youth Hostels. When classes have let out for the summer, the dorms in the city center on campus are also converted into accomodations for backpackers. The city center is a great place to be located with a choice in nightlife for everyone. Many places stay open far past Last Call in the States and into the next morning.

If you're just looking to chill out, the city center square has a park always full of young people sitting around the grass and benches. At night, the square becomes a popular venue for live music.
