UPDATE: Microsoft is still investigating the hacking but according to a statement they released, it is likely the emails were hacked into by a phishing scheme.
BREAKING NEWS: October 5, 2009
If you have email addresses ending with @hotmail.com, @msn.com and @live.com it is a good idea to change your password.
According to reports from neowin.net, a technology blog, it received information that thousands of email account passwords have been leaked to the internet. The passwords were posted on the site, pastebin.com on the 1st of October. The website is used by developers to share code. Although the details have been removed, neowin.net and BBC confirm seeing 10, 027 names starting with the letters A and B. It is possible there are other lists with passwords of email account holders. Most of the email account holders were in Europe. Neowin.net reported the hacking to Microsoft's Security Response Center and to Microsoft's PR teams based both in the United States and the United Kingdom.
A Microsoft spokesperson said, "We're actively investigating the situation and will take appropriate steps as rapidly as possible."
