In an interview yesterday with Emily McKhann, one of the creators of the resourceful site for moms called The Motherhood.com, we discussed how the website began and how it has impacted moms in a very positive way.
The site was created by both Emily McKhann and Cooper Munroe. They are both moms who did not set out initially to start a website, but through events, the enlightening and informative website known as TheMotherhood.com came to be. Their journey to the creation of TheMotherhood.com has been duly noted in the most intriguing manner in their timeline, in which they both tell of their life experiences, and what mutually compelled them to see that there was a need of such a website for moms everywhere.
The devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina left so many people in dire straits, and the rest of the nation watching at the edge of their seats. The realization that these people needed help, now, and were not receiving it fast enough led Emily and Cooper to get into action. They used their blog at the time to ask their readers to help, and while they complied a list of things that the survivors of Hurricane Katrina would need, they also worked on getting housing that would be made available to these survivors. Tens of thousands of people wrote into their website and wanted to do more. The selfless dedication to their fellow man, and use of technology that was available to them, has proved that these two moms are an example to other moms around the world.
Their Blog, Been There, won the Best of Blog Award that year. Emily McKhann put it best when she said"..belief in women, moms online, and their ability to change the world.." is what encouraged her and Cooper to ultimately turn their blog into a website. Emily and Cooper have taken what was tragic event, and reached out to others, who reached back to help. They used technology in ways that even if it was unimaginable, became a foundation of what is to come.
TheMotherhood.com reaches out to women to help each other. It is a community, of women from various and diverse backgrounds," where the conversations are real, in a trusted community of moms, safety in using the website, and knowledge of the women who use it". Emily also said that "TheMotherhood.com is a place that women can find support, and leave the world a little better than we found it".
There are a host of topics and discussions to be found on this website, anything from advice, to knowledge from other moms who have been there, and gone through some of life's challenges already. There is much to find, participate, and discuss on TheMotherhood.com. One of the discussions from a community of readers led to a series on the website called Motherhood Talks: 100 Talks in 100 Days. This discussion includes not only community members, but outside experts to talk about life's challenges.
Emily and Cooper also have a new campaign. It began when they attended the Distracted Driving Summit in Washington D.C., that they decided to create a campaign to help spread the word about reducing distracted driving. They have a few hundred signatures to their pledge already, and will continue their website in positive ways that continue to help women to be able to help themselves, each other, and their communities in simplified ways through their website.
