Healthy shopping tips that save money.

Andrea Smith from Take Charge America, Inc., a non-profit credit counseling company, shares important tips on how we can eat healthier and save money while doing so.  It's as easy as...

  • Planning a shopping list.
  • Creating your menu plan for the week.
  • Writing down the ingredients you will need.
  • Checking your shelves for items you already have.
  • Double checking for staples, like eggs, breads and cleaning supplies.

Using coupons is a great way to save money on groceries.  Grocery coupons can be found on the internet, local news papers, and direct mail.

  • Keep them organized.
  • Pull out the ones you need for this weeks menu.
  • Shop at stores that double your coupons.
  • Remember you don't have to use coupons for things you do not need.
  • Shop once a week to save money, time and gasoline.
  • Keep inventory of what's in the freazer and cupboards.
  • Choose stores that have the items we need at the lower prices.
  • Visit a Farmers Market for locally grown fresh produce, that is less expensive and does not contain preservatives.

When in the grocery store, prevent impulse buying by....

  • Shopping on the outside aisles where fresh produce, bakery and dairy items are displayed. The inside aisles contain products that are frozen processed, less healthy and are more expensive.
  • Check the lower shelves because the most expensive ones are found at eye level.
  • Buy generic brands that are basically the same product but much less costly.
  • Buy from bulk bens that are less expensive than packaged goods, such as cereals, nuts and grains.
  • Check discounts and Dollar Stores that carry name brand cleaning products and paper goods.
  • Don't buy items near the register.
  • Don't let advertisers convince you to buy things you do not need.
  • If you find items on sale that you use frequently, buy as much of it as you can, but don't make the mistake of buying to much of one thing, and not having enough for the things your really need.

Be mindful about controlling your food budget.

  • Every time you go to the grocery store analyze your spending.
  • Take note of the items that you purchases unnecessarily.

With these great tips from, Take Charge America we can enjoy healthy foods and be great shoppers.  Want to enhance your well being by waking up fresh on a Saturday Morning, maybe get some exercise and some fresh produce at the same time.  Gardena has a Farmer's Market that goes on from 6:30 a.m. until Noon.
