Grow Team One has a new garden planned in Burlington's Old North End

Site of Grow Team One's newest garden in the Old North End looking towards Colchester

Burlington’s Old North End is about to get a bit greener with a new garden in the works through Grow Team One.  The lot next to the Burlington Housing Authority’s 669 Riverside Avenue Apartment is being prepared to house four to six raised beds this summer.  The project is a joint effort between several groups, including Grow Team One and the Burlington Housing Authority.

Right now, the lot is just a great big area of potential.  It is not the most garden friendly at first glance, but it overlooks the valley, and you can see Colchester across the way.  The gardens full potential will probably not be reached this summer, but there is a lot of anticipation of what is to come.  In the next few days and weeks, tree stumps will be removed, the land will be leveled and a tool shed will be added.

The garden beds will be mostly tended by groups this summer rather than individuals, and there are discussions underway to use of the beds for the Grow Another Row campaign.  The Parks and Recreation Group and the Dream Team—groups that host summer programs at the 669 Riverside Avenue apartment complex—will be bringing children over from the complex to help introduce them to gardening.

All in all, things are looking quite good and even the thought fresh air is amicable to my lungs.  When I view the lot, although I find the concept of gardening a bit intimidated, I am excited.  There will be many opportunities to teach my children and get to know my neighbors better.  It is an area full of potential for growth; growth of greenery, beauty, food for the hungry and even relationships, all of which need cultivation and care.  I look forward to keeping you up to date on the progress!
