So as the summer gets rolling and StayAtHomeMoms everywhere rack their brains for things to do with their kids, why not spend some time teaching them some cooking basics?
Over the next few weeks, you’ll find great kid-friendly recipe ideas here.
First things first: mentally prepare yourself that it is okay to make a mess, and okay for the end-product to not look like it should be fed to anyone but your dog. Think of this cooking time more like an activity or craft project, and less like something that your body needs in order to live (food). Relax. Enjoy the process.
HOT DOG HOWLERS*
Ingredients:
Hot dog sauce:
•1 cup water
•1 small onion, finely chopped
•1/3 cup tomato ketchup
•1 teaspoon mustard powder
•1 teaspoon light brown sugar
•1 teaspoon paprika (optional)
•8 good-quality all-beef hot dogs
•Small white or whole-wheat rolls
•1 1/3 cup grated cheddar cheese
Preparation:
• In a saucepan combine all the sauce ingredients. Bring to a boil and reduce the heat. Simmer for 5-10 minutes until thick and pulpy.
• Cook the hot dogs in boiling water until heated through.
• To serve, slice the rolls lengthwise. Place a hot dog in each roll, and top with the sauce and grated cheese.
Depending on your children’s ages, allow them to help make the hot dog sauce. Older kids who can wield a knife safely can slice the rolls or grate the cheese. Smaller hands might succeed in measuring out the brown sugar and lesser ingredients.
Just remember to take your time, find teachable moments, and have fun!
