Letterpress from Sugarcube
The event on March 26th at Landis Stationery and Gifts was a tremendous success. Thank you to everyone who attended. Hosted by Edie Frére, Landis’ owner and stationery guru along with the contributions of some of Larchmont’s specialty retailers, the store looked fabulous with fresh flowers, champagne and chocolate. Everyone had a wonderful time. 10% of all sales for the evening went to The Ebell Club of Los Angeles.
I had the opportunity to meet Elizabeth and Kelsie, the duo behind the letterpress company Sugarcube Press. “Sweetly Vintage, uniquely modern” is their slogan and it’s true. The designs have the feeling of being vintage but with a twist of modern sophistication. Based in Ojai, Sugarcube uses a pair of 100-year-old presses, non-toxic inks that are hand mixed as well as tree-free and recycled paper. 1% of all their sales go to For the Planet and other environmental causes.
Cotton Candy, Red Velvet, Toasted Marshmallow and Chocolate Mint are just a few of the ink colors they offer. Sugarcube sells individual cards for all occasions including birthday cards with cupcakes to skulls and cross bones. They offer boxed foldover note cards in sets of 6 with several designs including orchids and mushrooms to Merci and Cheers. If you like having your initial on your correspondence you can choose between a foldover note and a number 10 flat card. If you’re having a party, from a dinner to luncheon or baby shower, the designs are adorable and they are imprintable. Any holiday, mother’s day, father’s day, Valentines Day, Halloween and Christmas look for their individual cards and boxed holiday cards. I love the Halloween cards and invites. Something Sugarcube does that I really like are their coordinating coasters to match some of their imprintables and cards. The are either four inch square or round and a must have to continue with your party motif. For any book enthusiast, bookplates are offered in a box of 15 and they are peel and stick with great designs like an owl or goldfish. Be sure to visit their website at sugarcubepress.com and stop into Landis to have a look.
I also had the opportunity to meet Elkpen, a local artist who is inspired by the natural world around her. She has painted murals around LA and focuses on the wildlife that exists in the Los Angeles environment, mainly birds. Her art emphasizes the individuality and personality of what we see everyday but so often fail to notice, she brings those attributes into our consciousness and through her work, we too become more aware. Her notecards are little works of art that inspire. Be on the look out for her murals, stop and take a moment to take a look. You can visit her website at www.elkpen.com
Thank you again Edie and everyone at Landis for hosting such a wonderful event and introducing us to Sugarcube Press and Elkpen.
