Faux Starbucks baristas protest outside new 15th Ave Coffee & Tea

Ah, what would a Starbucks store opening be without a few protesters sprinkled in? Yesterday, customers of the new un-Starbucks store, 15th Ave Coffee & Tea, were greeted by four smiling, enthusiastic un-Starbucks employees including a fake Howard (Howie) Schultz.

The Stranger’s SLOG reported that four protesters “welcomed passersby and shouted, ‘Grand opening! Capitol Hill’s first local coffeeshop!’ Asked who organized their protest and where they’re from, they’re adamantly refusing to break character. ‘We’re just in the neighborhood and wanted to come out and support our first local coffeeshop,’ Faux-Barista-With-Balloons said.”

Now, this protest probably would have made more sense in any other city but Seattle. You see, Starbucks very first store which opened in 1971 is located in the Pike Place Market.

Starbucks truly is the “first local coffeeshop” in Seattle. And if “local” means contributing to the local economy…Starbucks does that too. Their corporate headquarters, northwest regional office, roasting plant and distribution center are all based in the Seattle area employing thousands of Seattleites.

We applaud your passion and effort smiling-faux-Starbucks-baristas, but your message didn’t quite hit the mark.

I'm never quite sure I get the animosity towards corporations. Do these people buy cars? Shop at the Gap, Eddie Bauer, Ann Taylor, Nordstrom? Shop even at Whole Foods? Buy anything from Jamba Juice? Starbucks does so much for Seattle. We're lucky to have it here. Cindy did you write this article?

i think the problem people have with starbucks is that there are many instances of starbucks coming into am area and purposefully driving all the local shops out of business. starbucks even buys the buildings the local shops rent and raises the rent astronomically if they can. starbucks is admitting they have an image problem by removing all branding from their stores.
