Stanford football vs San Jose State game notes

Stanford 1-1 vs San Jose State 0-2, 6pm at Stanford Stadium

TV/Radio: The game will not be televised. It can be heard on XTRA Sports 860 starting at 5pm. KZSU will also broadcast the game. KLIV 1590 will have the San Jose State call starting at 5:30pm

The Bill Walsh Legacy Game: Bill Walsh will again be honored in the rivalry game named for him.

Ken Margerum: The former Stanford great and current Spartan wide receivers coach will be honored in pre-game ceremonies for his induction into the college football hall of fame.

The Series: Stanford leads the all-time series 48-14-1. Stanford has won six of the last seven meetings including last year 23-10 at Stanford Stadium. San Jose’s last win came in 2006 when they beat the Cardinal 35-34 at Spartan Stadium. The series will take at least a one year hiatus next year as San Jose cancelled the game so they could play Alabama instead. The Cardinal have scheduled Sacramento State as a replacement game.

STANFORD NOTES:
This is the first of seven home games for Stanford. Stanford was 4-1 at home last year.

Stanford is 3-10 in non-conference games dating back to 2005. Two of those wins have come against San Jose State with the third being at Navy in 2005.

Toby Gerhart is now 9th on the all-time Stanford rushing list with 1,854 yards. He needs 87 yards to pass Anthony Kimble and move into 8th place. Gerhart’s 18 rushing touchdowns tie him with Kimble and Bobby Grayson for sixth on Stanford’s all-time list. Gerhart has had success vs San Jose State with two of his top three performances coming against San Jose. He rushed for 140 yards in the 2007 game and 148 yards in last year’s game.

Junior wide receiver Ryan Whalen set career highs at Wake Forest with nine receptions and 123 receiving yards. Whalen leads the Pac-10 in yards per game (98.5) and is second in receptions per game (6.5)

Quarterback Andrew Luck ranks second in the Pac-10 in passing yards per game at 234.5.

Nate Whitaker’s 54-yard field goal at the end of the first half on Saturday equaled the fifth-longest in school history. It is the longest since John Hopkins kicked a 54-yarder against San Jose State in 1989.

Coaching connections: Three current San Jose assistant coaches have also served at Stanford: Ken Margerum, Kent Baer and Steve Morton. Stanford offensive line coach Tim Drevno held the same position at San Jose in 1999.

SAN JOSE STATE NOTES:
The Spartans are 0-2 to start the season with losses to USC and Utah. It is the first time since 2001 that San Jose State has played back-to-back games against Top-25 teams.

This will be head coach Dick Tomey’s 326 game as a collegiate head coach ranking him 16th on the all-time list.

San Jose has not beat a Pac-10 team since beating Stanford in 2006.
