Stanford football players in the 2009 NFL Draft

The NFL Draft coming up this weekend there are up to six Stanford football players that could be selected. In all likely only one or maybe two players will get drafted. The possibility also exists that no Stanford football player could get drafted, which would be the second year in a row the Cardinal gets shut out. If that happens, it would be the first time in the modern draft era the Cardinal would get shut out in back to back years.

The hope is that at least one of the below if not more get selected. Below is a list of players that could get drafted and my best guess as to when and if their names get selected. You can click on the links for previous articles posted that goes in depth on each player’s strength and weaknesses:

CB Wopamo Osaisai: 6th round. Someone will like his speed and take a chance on him. (Raider fans, this is an Al Davis type of player with his sprinter speed).

DE Panel Egboh: 7th round. He was too good as junior for someone to not take a chance on him despite his senior season numbers.

C Alex Fletcher: 7th round. He will add quality depth to someone’s offensive line.

LB Pat Maynor:  UFA. Someone will pick him up and take him to camp. All he does is tackle. Who would not want that?

RB Anthony Kimble:  UFA. He can’t quite crack the draft, but he has enough tools to get a long look at someone’s camp. Special teams will be his way in the door.

T Ben Muth: UFA. I did not do a preview on Muth because I have not found him on the radar of many NFL Draft sites. But at 6’7 and 300 lbs you would think that a 1st team All-Pac Ten player would get a look from somebody.

It will be a quiet day on Saturday, but the Stanford faithful will hope for at least a few names to be called on Sunday. I am optimistic about three names in the final two rounds, but would not be shocked to see the silence continue on Sunday as well.

It always surprises me how many late draft picks from Stanford go on to have very nice careers in the NFL. Chris Draft (6th round) immediately comes to mind, but there have been many others. My best guess is the fact the players are smart, can quickly learn complex NFL schemes and stay out of trouble off-hours.

There are definitely a few players from this draft that could put together similar type NFL careers if they get the right breaks.
