Stanford football lands 2012 recruit

It was just two days ago when the Stanford Cardinal landed its earliest verbal commitment in history. Now Stanford shattered that record by getting a verbal from a player for the 2012 season.

Skyler Mornhinweg is entering his sophomore season at St. Joseph's prep in Philadelphia, but he has already given his verbal to Coach Jim Harbaugh and the Stanford Cardinal.

The Mornhinweg name may look familiar to Bay Area fans. He is the son of former San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator and Detroit Lions head coach Marty Mornhinweg. Coach Morninweg is currently the offensive coordinator with the Eagles.

The young Mornhinweg played free safety as a freshman but as he enters his sophomore year he expects to compete at quarterback and safety.

The Palo Alto Weekly reports Mornhinweg told Scout.com that he has been of fan of Stanford since his family was in the Bay Area:

"I grew up in California and Stanford was always on of the places that I wanted to go. I have great respect for Coach Jim Harbaugh and I've known the Harbaugh's for a longtime. It made my decision pretty easy."

With this very early commitment, Stanford is now lined up with 17 verbals for the 2010 season, one verbal for 2011, and now one for 2012.

All I can say is, Harbaugh is amazing. And these comitments from NFL-associated kids like Carlisle and Mornhinweg indicate that Harbaugh is well-liked and respected in NFL circles (no surprise there).
