Stanford football Head Coach Jim Harbaugh calls this “improvement week.” The Cardinal has the week off after the 33-14 whipping of Arizona State last Saturday. The next game is November 7th against the Oregon Ducks.
The rest of the world calls this a bye week, not Harbaugh. “The
strategy is to improve and we are as football team,” the coach says.
That will be the focus of the week, improvement. “When you look at the opponent we play next, Oregon and then games after that there are some real heavyweights,” Harbaugh said during his weekly Tuesday media gathering.
The plan for the bye week will be to give the players a few extra days off to rest and recover while focusing in on getting better for the final stretch run. The team had Tuesday off before resuming practice on Wednesday and Thursday. Friday is a lifting day followed by another off day on Saturday and back to practice on Sunday.
In terms of what improvements the Cardinal will be focused on Harbaugh says they will be looking ahead to Oregon. “Number one is that no-huddle offense that we need improvement on defending. That will also help our offense in no huddle and two-minute type of situations. We will get some good Stanford vs Stanford work. But the eye will be on improving toward Oregon.”
Part of the Stanford vs Stanford work will include a team scrimmage on Thursday among players that do not get on the field very much if at all.
Harbaugh also addressed other areas of improvement the team will be focused on. “We need to really focus on an individual technique. So we are going to do that.” Harbaugh went on to say they would look at themselves schematically as well to see if there are places they can add a coverage or a blitz, and on offense maybe add a few plays.
You can be sure that part of the Saturday off day coming up will include watching USC at Oregon, the next two teams on the schedule for the Cardinal.
