Quarterback Andrew Luck is the presumed favorite to win the starting quarterback competition for Stanford this year. I had the opportunity briefly chat with the redshirt freshman at the open house Saturday.
Q: How is the off-season going for you?
It is going great. I’ve been working hard, running a lot of routes, a lot of team activities. It has been great.
Q: As you get ready for training camp, what is that first week of camp going to be like?
It is going to be hectic, it will be crazy. There will be a lot of reps with three quarterbacks. It is going to be a lot of fun. It will be nice to be around all the guys and just play football.
Q: As you get ready for the season, people are saying that you will end up being the starting quarterback. In your mind, what do you have to do to earn that job?
Come out and do my hardest everyday. I can control what I can control. We have two other great quarterbacks. Tavita has done everything. He beat USC, he is great. I can control what I can control and leave the rest up to the coaching staff.
Q: What are the things you are working on in your game as we head toward training camp?
I am working a lot on my footwork, learning the playbook even more. You can never stop understanding why we do stuff.
Q: How much time do you spend with the playbook? How complicated is it to learn?
In the beginning, you really have to dive into it. Now it is picking up on little things. At practice you call plays and you run it, then you go back and think about it. Why did we do this, why did we do that?
Q: What has to happen for Stanford to take that next step to the next level?
Just come out and play mistake free football. We have great players and a great coaching staff. We have the opportunity to do some great things. We just have to be mistake free.
Q: As a fan I am dying for football. As a student athlete are you enjoying the summer or ready for football?
I am definitely enjoying the summer, but I can’t wait to put the pads on.
