This was an interesting and unexpected piece of news:
JJ Hones has been dismissed from the Stanford women's basketball team for a violation of team rules.
No other details were given, but it eliminated any possibility that Hones would return for next season. How much she could have contributed next season was very much in question anyway. She had microfracture knee surgery last month, and it would probably have been at least until December before she could play. It might have taken another month after that, maybe two, for her to return to close to peak efficiency.
Academically, Hones was a senior this season but she had another season of eligibility left because she missed all but two games of the 2008-2009 season.
Hones was the Cardinal's starting point guard for most of her freshman and sophomore seasons, but played just two games in 2008-2009 before tearing her anterior-cruciate ligament for the second time during her Stanford career. She never fully recovered from the injury, and her playing time was limited throughout the 2009-2010 season because of it. Hones did play 21 minutes in the NCAA championship game against Connecticut, however.
The microfracture surgery was the last effort to see whether she could play another season, and it was very possible that Hones would not have returned to the team next season anyway if her recovery time from surgery took longer than expected.
Because her availability for next season was so uncertain, Hones took part in Senior Day ceremonies as one of the team's departing seniors in the Cardinal's final home game.

Comments
When you consider the extent to which Tara VanDerveer inexplicably kept Rosalyn Gold-Onwude out of the mix during the championship game against UConn, in a manner that seemed personal, you wonder if relationships on the team are as hunky-dory as the team said they were.
Welterweight Champion, I agree with you on it being a personal matter. I think had Ros played more the championship game outcome could have been a different outcome. JJ Hones is a smart and skilled guard who unfortunately due to injuries never really got to show most people out of Stanford.
