Rams trade for wide receiver

The Rams and Billy Devaney have said this entire offseason that they were going to continue to try and upgrade the roster before the start of training camp.  They did so today.  According to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch the Rams have traded defensive tackle Orien Harris to the Detroit Lions for wide receiver Ronald Curry.

Harris was traded to the Rams from the Bengals for Brian Leonard back in May so he spent all of 2 plus months as a Ram without ever playing a down in a game.  Ronald Curry helps address the lack of depth in the wide receiver corps but is not a move that should overly excite Rams fans.  Curry was released from the Oakland Raiders after the season after catching only 19 passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns.  He was picked up by the Lions in April and spent almost as short of a time in Detroit as Harris did with the Rams.

Ronald Curry is a bigger wide receiver at 6-2 210 pounds.  If you'll remember Curry is a tremendous athlete playing both football and basketball while at the University of North Carolina.  So he can jump through the roof.  The problem with Curry is that he has had a tough time staying on the field.  He was injured for significant portions of the 2004 and 2005 season.  Curry has shown flashes of being a good NFL receiver with three 50+ catch seasons but last season was a definite step backwards.  In addition he turned 30 which for a wide receiver can mean that the end is near.

I will give credit to the Rams that they are looking to make some moves with the wide receiver position and maybe you can catch some lightning in a bottle with Curry.  The problem of course is that the Rams don't have any real established receivers and there are not really any great options just hanging around on the waiver wire for the Rams to fix the problem.  This pickup signifies the Rams are trying to make sure that they are going to, at the very least, open the competition up and find the best options they can have so when they hit the field in Seattle they are competitive.

Today is another good sign in the rebuilding of the Rams.  This is a clear sign that the Rams know what their needs are and they will do the best they can to make sure they field a competitive team in 2009.
