Frustration sets in after game 2 loss

It's the morning after and I'm still frustrated about the 3-0 loss to the Vancouver Canucks Friday night at GM Place. The Canucks now lead the series 2-0 as they head to St. Louis for games 3 and 4.

There has to be some frustration setting in on the side of the Blues, who have only scored one goal in the first two games of the series.

Goaltender Roberto Luongo (while getting help from some goal posts) has only allowed the one PP goal to Brad Boyes over his last four games.

The Blues threw everything but the kitchen sink at Luongo, but the crowd still had reason to cheer "Looooooo!"

Great chances by David Backes on the doorstep, Andy McDonald on the rush and a pinching Carlo Colaiacovo were all stymied by the Italian netminder.

Any time broadcasters use the word "solve" in regards to a goaltender, it means he's been near perfect.

And that's just what Blues color man Bernie Federko said during the final minutes of Friday's loss.

While some scuffles after the final buzzer may have had something to do with the Blues' lack of success in the offensive end, most of it was payback for the cheap shots administered by the Canucks throughout the first two games.

In the waning seconds, Defensemen Kevin Bieksa slew-footed B.J. Crombeen in the corner. When Crombeen got back to his feet he rushed Bieksa and a scrum ensued.

Bieksa's display is only one of the many ways Vancouver has cheapened the series. Elbows by Shane O'Brien and unnecessary face-washes by Alex Burrows have paved the way for more physicality between the two teams.

Both Blues and Canucks fans know what to expect when the two teams head to Scottrade Center Sunday evening.

The Blues have only come back to win a series once after being down 2-0.

The Blues have their work cut out for them, but if there was ever a team to do the near-impossible...

Good thing I wasn't on the ice at the end of that game last night. I would've liked to go all "Todd Bertuzzi" on Bieksa.

Crying about the Canucks playing tough? Hahaha suck it up ya wimp, it's the playoffs. Not only do you not know Rick Rypien from his football playing cousin Mark Rypien but, you also can't tell a simple trip from a slew foot. Just classic. Ready to golf?

Luongo is not Italian. He was born in Montreal, Quebec which is a Province in Canada. He is Canadian.

The Blues are a soft team. The Canucks are a tough team. Inevitably, in this contrast the soft team is too frightened to go to the front of the net and therefore has trouble scoring. The Blues need to overhaul their roster in the off-season.

Enjoy the off-season which starts for you on April 22nd.

For the uneducated: "A Minor penalty or, at the discretion of the Referee, a Major penalty and a Game Misconduct penalty shall be assessed any player who uses his feet to knock an opponents skates out from under him with a kicking or leg dragging motion from behind ("slew footing")."

I'm a HUGE blues fan.. which is obvious cuz of my screen name. But seriously you calling that trip with a stick, a slewfoot is absolutely hilarious and shows how you know next to nothing about hockey and further continue the stereotype of americans being ignorant to the sport.

Bieksa's trip wasn't a slew foot and no one deserves what 'Todd Bertuzzi' did to Steve Moore. Inappropriate commentary.

its funny that you whine about the 'slew foot' and call it dirty but didnt realize that st. louis was running everybody with under a minute left to go in the game. the game was over, yet the blues still threw the body, so the tough guys came out at the end and it led to a scrum. a 'taste of your own medicine' so to speak.

not to mention that your blues on every whistle are heading straight for the net. getting bodies infront of the net after the whistle doesnt get goals, getting pucks on the net during the play does.

    learn hockey before you write.

Ha! I love hockey and I'm cheering for St. Louis. This is a poorly written, subjective article. There's been no elbows thrown by St. Louis? Vancouver has "cheapened the series"? I'm a Blues fan and I think they have gotten away with more than Vancouver. Especially in the second game. Did you even watch the game? The cheapest part of the series was the spraying of Luongo in the first game. But you won't mention that would you? That's actually dangerous for the eyes of a goalie. Facewashing happens from both sides as well. Stop whining publicly unless the Canucks actually do get out of hand. You make Blues fans sound ignorant.

i agree with kirk, we blues have gotten away with so much, we've been way more dirty than vancouver.

ceeb is also right, the blues were running the sedins when the clock was winding down so...

The Blues made an incredible run to get into the playoffs, but it's clear they will be no match for the Canucks in this series. Mason has been excellent and is the reason they haven't been blown out yet, but Luongo has turned superhuman. As for the Bertuzzi comment, Bieksa would drop you like a bag of dirt if you even thought of coming after him. What I'd like to see is Bertuzzi coming after you for using his name. Now that would be sweet.

LOL... Written like a true fan of a losing team, you really need to understand the game. It's the playoffs, things get a little rough in the playoffs. The Blues and Canucks are both guilty of cheapshots, slewfoots, and rough play. The difference is, the Canucks have the ability to score goals when it counts, and the Blues have very little ability period. They are relying on a great goaltender in Chris Mason, and their forwards are no match for the Canadian born, Roberto Luongo.

When people who support your team are pointing out flaws in your argument, it really shows how terrible your writing is. Your facts are incorrect. Your 'excuses' are lame.

If you're going to talk about 'cheapening' the series, try talking about something that didn't happen with 3 seconds left at the end of a 3-0 shutout.

How about the time when Kesler was hobbling to the bench and Backes decided to shove him? Or when Keith Tkachuk slashed the stick out of Ryan Johnson's hand (twice in succession) when he was trying to defend against the extra attacker?

If you're going to make excuses for sub-par play, at least make plausible ones.

Through your commentary it's clear you are a "fan" but also that you have never lived hockey so you don't truly understand it. These aren't prerequisites to being a decent columnist but good lord - stick to your strengths whatever that might be. Good on you for your passion but dude you need to take a breather and maybe ask someone who understands the game. The first step is admitting you need help and the second is seeking it. I know that St. Louis is a good hockey town with knowledgeable fans and we've seen that in Vancouver through past games and playoff series. See if you can connect with some. Until then you should stop writing. And by the way, the comments on this post are spot on.

Let me spell out the reality of this series:
the Blues are missing two top 4 defencemen. Thus, Vancouver has fair superior defence. Luongo is coming off a shutout. Mason has played well, and shouldn't be held responsible for any of the goals, but the Blues just can't match Vancouver defensively. Lastly, while the Blues may have more forward depth, Vancouver relies on a combination of veteran and young players, as well as being able to role all four lines. Vancouver players are fulfilling their roles (and that includes physicallity). Everyone on Vancouver, for the most part, is playing well. Combine that with home ice advantage and it is no surprise the Canuck's are up 2-0. The Blues' young guys just aren't good enough yet. That is the truth of this series, the Blues have a good future ahead of them, but Vancouver is better defensively, offensively and in net RIGHT NOW. Face the facts; Canucks in FIVE.
