The St. Louis Arch is among 4 distinct American landmarks chosen for the United We Serve PSA filming. Other locations include the Statue of Liberty/Liberty Island, Yosemite National Park, and the Seattle Space Needle/Kerry Park. Mike Ricketts from F.I.S.H. has been chosen to represent RSVP volunteers from St. Charles County, as he shares his story of volunteer service.
Those interviewed take their place on a soapbox to symbolize the ability of Americans to express themselves as individuals, and the way in which individuals have had a positive impact on the history of this country.
The United States of America is built on the service of men and women, generation after generation. The story of volunteerism is wrapped within the history of this country. Our founding fathers stepped forward to make a difference through their service to colonies, which later grew to become this great country, They did so out of a heart of service, compelled not by others, but by a determination to make a difference.
As volunteers today step forward, they do so in many ways, dedicated to maintaining this country and its citizens. There are those individuals who may remember a defining moment, as they decided to give of themselves to those who are in need. For others it may be a lifestyle which began long ago, having always been a part of who they are. There are those who may have been inspired by the service of others and have chosen to follow that example. Whatever the compelling moment may have been, it is an important aspect of what being an American truly means.
Mike Ricketts is among many RSVP volunteers within the St. Charles County area. RSVP is a volunteer program for individuals 55 years of age and older.
