Jason Meyers used a last-corner pass on Steve Kinser to claim his first World of Outlaws victory of the season at the Super Sprint Classic at the 1/2-mile dirt track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Friday night. The last lap pass capped an amazing charge to the front for Meyers, who started 18th in the field of the 30-lap feature.
“I don’t think I have ever won a race from that far back and I don’t know when the last time an Outlaws race was won from that far back,” said Meyers in post-race comments posted at the World of Outlaws Web site. “We went out and were trying to get a Top-Five on a night that had kind of gone backwards on us. The guys gave me one heck of a race car and there was a great track tonight. My hat’s off to my team.”
The win was a boost to Meyers' Elite Racing team on a tough week. Jim Boyd, a longtime series fixture and father-in-law of Meyers' crew chief D.J. Lindsay, passed away earlier in the week.
Donny Schatz took third after leading 26 total laps after he was passed by Meyers and then Kinser in the final two laps. Kinser passed Meyers in the backstretch of the final lap, but Meyers was able to get past Kinser in turn four and beat him to the line by 0.237 seconds.
With his second place finish, Kinser moved into the top spot in the series points standings ahead of Tony Stewart Racing teammate Schatz. The World of Outlaws ext race at the Tulare Thunderbowl in central California next Friday and Saturday.
