If you're going to watch NFL games during the month of October, you'll be seeing much more pink than normal. Not pink like rosy cheeks or Pink the singer, but rather pink purposefully incorporated into the game itself. This month the NFL is collaborating with the American Cancer Society on a program called "A Crucial Catch: Annual Screening Saves Lives."
The spokespersons for this initiative are Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald and Tanya Snyder, wife of Dan Snyder, owner of the Washington Redskins. Both were chosen because of their close ties to breast cancer. Snyder has suffered from breast cancer personally and Fitzgerald's mother passed away from it while he was in college.
According to NFL.com the NFL Breast Cancer Awareness games will feature:
- Players wearing pink cleats, wristbands, gloves, sideline caps, helmet decals, captains' patches, sideline towels and quarterback towels
- Pink sideline caps for coaches and sideline personnel and pink ribbon pins for coaches and team executives
- On-field pink ribbon stencils and Crucial Catch wall banners
- Pink goal post padding in end zones
- K-balls with pink ribbon decals
- Pink coins used for coin toss
- Crucial Catch pink rally towels for all fans attending Sunday Night and Monday Night Football games on October 4-5
Many players have expressed their excitement to participate in this cause through Twitter.
Chris Cooley, TE for the Redskins, posted "I will be wearing pink gloves and cleats on Sunday. My fam, will be wearing these http://pic.gd/4bc721"
The outspoken WR for the Cincinnati Bengals, Chad Ocho Cinco, also is planning to support this cause. "http://twitpic.com/ju0fa - Supporting breast cancer all month long"
New York Giants TE Kevin Boss also posted his support, "Excited to wear pink gloves this week in support of breast cancer awareness month! Pink shoes the following week!"
Chris Johnson, RB for the Tennessee Titans, is incorporating pink into his uniform too. "I can't wait till I wear my pink cleats this sunday I'm gon send a picture"
As you watch football this month, embrace the pink. Maybe as a fan you can find a way to throw some pink into your attire, just as the players will be doing. Learn more about breast cancer and find ways to contribute at the American Cancer Society website.
