Bob Gibson memorabilia brings high prices, and hopefully no regrets

It's been a busy weekend in sports and sports collecting. Friday was the trade deadline for Major League Baseball, and the National Sports Collector's Convention is going on in Cleveland. I wrote on July 17 about the upcoming auction of some of Bob Gibson's finest memorabilia. The live auction for those items ended Friday night at the National Convention.

If my calculations are correct, the 12 Bob Gibson items sold by Legendary Auctions went for a total price of $456,900. The highest price realized for any of the items was $120,000 for Gibson's 1968 MVP award. (The award is pictured with this article). 1968 was the year he finished with an ERA of 1.12. The Bob Gibson Cy Young award from that same 1968 season sold for $84,000.

Some more highlights from the Bob Gibson auction were $30,000 for his 1981 Hall of Fame Induction Ring. $54,000 was the high bid for his 1967 World Championship ring. 1967 was the year the Cardinals beat the Red Sox in 7 games. Gibson was 3-0 in that series, including a complete game win in game 7. He had 3 complete games, 1 shutout, and gave up only 3 earned runs in the 27 innings he pitched during the 1967 Series, with 26 strikeouts.

Bob Gibson's personal hall of fame plaque, awarded at his induction, sold for $45,000. A game worn Gibson glove sold for $9000. His 2006 Cardinals World Championship ring sold for $57,000. Gibson received that ring from the Cardinals in recognition of his status as a consultant. You can see all of the items at the Legendary Auctions home page. http://www.legendaryauctions.com/catalog.aspx

I already stated my thoughts on the sale of these wonderful items in a previous article, so I won't repeat them here. I decided not to go this year. Autograph prices were way out of line for alot of these guys. $200 for Lynn Swann?? and he has the right no to sign any item he chooses? Some of the heisman winners were over priced too. $40 for Kordell Stewart? This guy was booed out of Pittsburgh and was a terrible quarterback. I even thought $60 was a bit much for Bruce Sutter. I’m just wondering, in this economy, where there many people paying these prices for autographs?

The only way autograph prices at shows come down is if people don't pay the prices they're asking. I agree with you. Those prices are out of line.
