As the defending Wimbledon Gentleman’s Champion Rafael “Raffa” Nadal told a packed press room at the All England Club that he was not going to play in this year’s tournament it sent shockwaves through the tennis world.
Before "Raffa" pulled out of WimbledonESPN tennis analyst Mary Carillo told me by phone last week that Nadal could have trouble with Wimbledon:”The ground is hard at Wimbledon and there is no doubt that it would put great pressure on Raffa’s knees.”
Carillo felt with that with his troubles at the French Open that perhaps his knees were not the only thing hurting Nadal:”I think that Raffa’s is shaken on the confidence side. I mean he lost on the surface he owned in Paris and going into Wimbledon that has to be in his head.”
Carillo on Venus Williams:”I don’t see how she is not seeded #1 her. This is her stage and she loves this tournament and no one plays here better than she does. Are there other women that can win here? Yes, but the road to the title goes through Venus.”
Carillo on the new roof over Centre Court:”It will help the top players for sure. I mean there will be no more rain delays. The court won’t get as chewed up as it has in the past so it will play better. Also with the lights and the way that sound bounces it is going to be a really great place to play and to watch tennis that is for sure. I think that people watching will enjoy seeing that new roof it is impressive.”
Lastly Carillo is not quite ready to name Roger Federer the Greatest Player of All Time:”There is no doubt that Federer is one of the best ever to play. He may very well break Pete Sampras record and win his 15th Major Title. That said I don’t really think the Raffa is out of the conversation for the best of all time. Raffa needs to win the U.S.Open to get his personal slam and then knows how far he could go? There is plenty of tennis to be played by both men and I would like to see how it plays out before I say that Federer is the best of all time.”
Wimbledon notes.. .
Dick Enberg is celebrating his 30th consecutive Wimbledon. The real voice of “Breakfast at Wimbledon” for years on NBC is now working with ESPN2 and it is always a pleasure to hear Enberg do tennis, he is a class act.
Another class act Cliff Drysdale – the two-time Wimbledon semifinalist who has been with ESPN since its first tennis telecast nearly 30 years ago, September 14, 1979. Chris Fowler, ESPN’s studio host for Grand Slam tennis since 2003, will share host duties with Suzy Kolber and he will also call select matches. They will team with analysts Darren Cahill, Mary Carillo, Mary Joe Fernandez, Brad Gilbert, Patrick McEnroe and Pam Shriver, plus Hall of Fame tennis journalist Bud Collins. Shriver will frequently be utilized as a roving reporter covering play in “outer courts” and as a sideline reporter.

I am a physician in the USA and an avid tennis fan. I just heard about Nadal's decision not to play in Wimbledon due to knee problems. For a number of decades I have worked with a potent free radical scavenger called DMSO (dimethylsulfoxide) that is supposedly used a lot in sport's medicine. It can be applied over the knees and will penetrate all tissue in the human body except the enamel of the teeth. DMSO can also be given intravenously or orally. I am assuming that Rafa's medical team is using DMSO but quite often assumptions are not born out in reality. Perhaps, there is some way for you to get this information to Rafa; he has nothing to lose and so much to gain.
