After a Saturday session that did not end until after midnight the executives at CBS and the Tennis Channel have to be pleased.
A day of upsets began with the early afternoon Melanie Oudin battle that saw the 17 year old darling of Center Court stunning Maria Sharapova winning in three sets 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. The young Oudin was nearly speechless after her victory.
Next up came a match that started on CBS but ended at around 9:40pm local time on Tennis Channel as upset #2 of the day saw John Isner defeating Andy Roddick, 7-6, 6-3, 3-6, 5-7, 7-6. It was the biggest upset so far in the men’s draw.
The Tennis Channel benefitted by getting the majority the Isner victory.
The upsets just kept coming as women’s No. 1 seed Dinara Safina was upset on Louis Armstrong Stadium by unseeded Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(5).
Then came the final match of the longest single day of tennis ever played at the US Open when American James Blake twice a quarterfinalist at the US Open, lost to No. 14 Tommy Robredo 7-6(2), 6-4, 6-4. Closing out a long but entertaing day of tennis in Flushing Meadows.
Headlining CBS Sports’ coverage is the 2000 and 2001 U.S. Open champion and women’s No. 3-seed Venus Williams playing 2005 U.S. Open champion Kim Clijsters; the women’s No. 2-seed and defending champion Serena Williams taking on No. 22-seeded Daniela Hantuchova; the men’s No. 3-seed Rafael Nadal against No. 32-seeded Nicolas Almagro.
Lead play-by-play announcer Dick Enberg is joined by expert analysts Mary Carillo and John McEnroe in the booth for the 10th consecutive year. Jim Courier joins CBS Sports’ U.S. Open announce team as an analyst and will call the action alongside Bill Macatee. Mary Joe Fernandez serves as reporter. Ian Eagle serves as contributor.
For the second day in a row the Tennis Channel will have the night session where Ted Robinson, Ian Eagle, Jimmy Connors and Martina Navrátilová along with Bill Macatee will be on hand to call the action.
